Originally First Baptist Church, designed in 1841 by the same architect that designed the U.S. Capitol, the building was bought by Virginia Commonwealth University and converted to a student center. Pinnacle Engineering provided structural analysis and design services for this $3.5 million renovation project. The existing building structure consisted of masonry bearing walls with wood and steel framing members. Work included design for replacement of floor structures, reinforcement of wood floor joists, and addition of structural steel framing to accommodate significant new bearing wall openings.
